Am I Dead or Am I Alive?

Am I Dead or Am I Alive?

I John 3:14 (New American Standard Version)

“We know that we have passed out of death and into life, because we love the brethren. He who does not love

abides in death.”

1.Know 2.Passed 3.Death 4.Life 5.Love 6.Brethren 7.Abides

Greek: Oida

We have seen, and so
we have understanding.
We recognize.
We realize.

We have passed out of death.
Greek: metabaino

We have left death.
We have withdrawn from death.
We have moved (on) from death

We know we have passed out of death.

(Greek: thanatos)
We have withdrawn, left, and moved on from the state, condition, and effect of being spiritually dead.

(We left behind an empty tomb.)

We know we have passed from
death (Thanatos) unto life (zoe)
because we love (agapao) the brethren.

Greek for brethren: adelphos
Christian brothers, fellow believers

Were you ever placed in the position of having to love somebody?

He who does not love abides in death.
Greek for abides: meno
Meno means: stays in death,
remains in death, continues in death

How can I be sure
I have passed from death unto life?

If you love the brethren, you have.
If you do not love the brethren, you have not.

Steps to loving the brothers and sisters…

•Ask God to give you love for them.

•Begin treating them like you love them.

•Change your behavior and thoughts toward them.

Do not end the lesson with the negative aspect of the verse:
“He who loves not abides in death.”
End with the positive aspect of the verse:
“We know we passed out from death unto life because we really do love the brethren!”
